Collingwood faces offers of racism in court.
The AFL has been asked to deprive Collingwood of championship points if explosive new racism accusations are confirmed in court. The Magpies, including CEO Craig Kelly, are facing scathing accusations, which were filed on Monday in the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia.
The filings name only one application, Mark Cleaver, the club’s former head of First Nations strategy, and one respondent, the Collingwood Football Club.
“The allegations in this case call into question whether the Collingwood Football Club has learned anything from its multiple self-inflicted racism scandals,” [3]
Daniel Victory, principal at Maurice Blackburn Lawyers, said in a statement to AAP.”We have the right to expect more from a club that has promised to do better.”
“The alleged conduct in this instance has no place in society or any athletic club, never alone in a league that claims to be an instrument of social change.”[4]
Football fans have a right to feel let down once again by the Collingwood Football Club.[7]
“The AFL should consider penalising premiership points from clubs if allegations like this are proven.”
In 2021, Collingwood commissioned an independent assessment to address racism.Former Magpies president Eddie McGuire described the report’s release as “a historic and proud day”McGuire resigned after more than 20 years in office, a week after his widely condemned remarks.
Collingwood and the AFL have been contacted for comment.[5]
