The 12-person jury convicted 54-year-old Hunter Biden of lying about his drug use on a form when purchasing a handgun in 2018. This verdict marks the first time a sitting president’s child has been criminally prosecuted. Hunter Biden faces potential jail time, coinciding with President Biden’s re-election campaign and coming just weeks after former President Donald Trump was convicted of a crime in New York.
While President Biden did not attend the trial in Delaware, several family members, including First Lady Jill Biden, regularly supported Hunter in court. After the verdict, President Biden traveled to Wilmington, Delaware, where he embraced his son on the tarmac.
In a statement, President Biden said, “I am the president, but I am also a dad. Jill and I love our son, and we are so proud of the man he is today.” He added that he would “accept the outcome of this case and continue to respect the judicial process as Hunter considers an appeal.” Despite the trial’s embarrassing revelations, including details of Hunter’s drug use and personal struggles, President Biden has ruled out pardoning his son.
Jurors heard from Hunter’s ex-wife, Kathleen Buhle, and former girlfriend, Zoe Kestan, who described his frequent drug binges and their impact on his family and friends. The court was also presented with text messages and photographs, including some showing a partially clothed Hunter Biden, to illustrate his addiction.
